Cookie loves to fetch, but only when she wants to. It's always when we have company, or if you are watching a movie, or when Tom goes outside.

This little bird made a nest and layed 3 eggs in our rocks out by the garden. When I went out to take a picture, she started screaching and layed down about 10 feet away and was pretending to be injured, just to distract me from her precious eggs.

the "injured" bird
This chicken is now in birdie heaven. She was laying one egg every day, being so dutiful and kind. "Chicken", as we affectionately called her was our survivor chicken from last summer. All her siblings got eaten by fox, racoons, skunks, neighbors dogs, but not her. She was so smart and would fly up into the lilac tree for protection. On Thursday night some wild animal got to her and had her for a midnight snack, and then the next night, 5 of our new chickens met the same fate as our lovely Chicken. Those cute speckled eggs got gobbled up the same night as well. I was so upset, so Tom reminded me that this is the cycle of life. The fox needs to eat too!

Skunks don't like being trapped I believe, and when you do trap them, it's best not to go near them at all if you know what I mean.

Aw, how cute! This is Chicken in her lilac tree.

I love this post! And I love the chicken house. I just heard "The Circle of Life" at the grocery store this morning, how appropriate. Those are cute speckled eggs. I just found a broken blue egg and a broken white egg in the backyard yesterday. It's that time of year. Poor "Chicken." :( What did you do with the skunk??
No comment on the fate of the skunk. Some things are better left unanswered. (I'll tell you in private, Heather)
I really wanted chickens...but Mike said a definite NO! So now we buy our beautiful brown eggs from a young man down the street. They are so much better than store-bought.
We usually don't have skunk problems until the corn comes on...then look out!
What a sad outcome for poor Chicken. What happened to the skunk? I like your photos.
that striping on the bird in the first photo is truely amazing! Makes for such a great photo. You should enter thatn in some sort of contest!
Cookie - so adorable!
You do have quite a few critters (minus a few chickens at the moment).....have you ever thought about opening a zoo over there? You could make some money!
