Every winter for the past 4 years we have hosted a child from South Korea. They stay with us for about 2 weeks and live with us as we live our daily lives. They go to the elementary school and attend class with the 6th graders. This year we had the priveledge of hosting the cutest girl named, Yeeun. She is the same age as Brinley and so needless to say, they had a fantastic time together. We grew to love this little visitor. She was a brilliant English speaker and conversationalist. In fact, she could give Brinley some serious competition in that area, hands down. She was so fun and friendly. When talking to her, you quickly realize she is just like any other little girl from around here. These experiences for the Korean children will hopefully be positive in that it will show them what Americans are really like and maybe dispell the negative images they might get from t.v. or elsewhere. We loved having her stay and hope that she will always keep in contact with us.
the walk to the bus stop
Walking to the bus stop is a bit different here than in Korea.
trip downtown to see Temple Square
It has been so cold this winter! This day was no exception. It did make for pretty scenes on temple square.
Joseph Smith Memorial building had some nice Valentine decor in the lobby.
The Lion House has really delicious rolls to eat. Yeeun didn't want the honey butter, I could not see why, it is so delicious.
Cultural Exchange
At the end of the stay here in America, the children give us a cultural program designed to teach us a bit of the Korean way of life. The kids perform, speak, show art work, or whatever they feel like presenting. Mr. Orr, who is the master mind of this whole thing, brings Korean food, namely, Kimchee, a favorite of the children. When you tell them that they will be having Kimchee, they usually squeal with delight.
Tim and Wendy and Tamera hosted some of the boys who came.
The Scott family hosted the other girl that came, Song Eun
The children dress in their native costume. Yeeun suprised us by giving hers to Brinley! We were so happy to have what we think is a treasure!
Making Cookies
Making Cookies
Thomas' cookies got eaten pretty much right after they got frosted.
Yeeun and Brinley wanted to make some Valentine cookies before Yeeun had to leave that night.
Here are my cookies that I made. I think I have no imagination at all. I always go for purple. Purple makes me happy. Purple is power!
Madison wanted to get in on the fun and decorate some.
Since Madison is travelling to China in May, she thinks of hardly nothing else. These are some characters she has learned. I know one of them is calendar. I wonder why she learned to write that?
Brinley made a special cookie for Yeeun, and Yeeun made one for Brinley.
The decorating possibilities were endless! The ones below, Yeeun made.
Good bye Yeeun, until we meet again.....

Well, I have two things to say, first is that i had tons of fun with Yeeun, and second, the boy with Mr. Ore and the Korean kid is exceptionally cute!!! Andy's such a cutie!!
Judging from Morgan's comment above, she and Lindsey are going to be a perfect match rooming together at EFY this summer.
Cute cookies! I love that you always choose purple, Jules. You ARE purple. I think it's so sweet.
Yeeun (and the others too) did a good job decorating her cookies. She seemed to have had a really fun time and I am glad Brinley and the rest of the kids could have that experience to learn of her culture. How sweet that she gave Brinley the traditional costume.
I kept turning my head sideways to see your sideways pictures. I wonder why your pictures do that. It's odd, and I have no advice for you to correct it.
Madison is going to China in May? Explain.
Thanks for the update. It was fun to see all the pictures. You look really pretty too, Julie. A tad bit too thin, but still pretty as can be. (I wish someone would tell ME that one day.)
It's so great when that can be a positive experience, and what a difference it makes when you can actually communicate with the child!
So glad that you had a great time with Yeeun. She seemed like a sweetie :o) Haylie loved playing with her and Brinley!
I'm way excited for efy with lindsey! After what you said about my comment I am way excited!! I love boys! tee hee! and Andy in the pic is my friend so it's funny!
The blue cookie sports the character for "salvation," the top green one is "rice," and the bottom one says "calendar." That's the extent of my knowledge of Chinese characters. I loved those cookies!
And to answer Auntie Kelly, YES! I'm going to China with my best friend Nicole and a friend with whom I work, McKay. His dad works for a tour company and goes to all sorts of places every summer, so that's how I found out about it. I'm terribly excited. We'll be going for seventeen days. We're going all over: Hong Kong, Beijing, Xian, the Yangtze and Li rivers, and a gazillion other places.
I want to go to Amrica and visit you★^^
I will study hard in here, and I will go to America again.
Also, I won at the announcer contest and speech contest.
I think it is because of your help in English.
Thank you, and see you~
